Former Clerk For The City Of Coffey Arrested

The former City Clerk for the community of Coffey – in Northern Daviess County, Mary Lou Browning, was charged with two counts of alleged Stealing and two counts of alleged Forgery.  The charges are the result of an audit that was released in July that showed more then $60,000 was missing from the community’s accounts.  The incidents are alleged to have taken place over a two-year period.

The charges include: alleged Stealing of $750 or more and Stealing of $25,000 or more.  Browning is also charged with two counts of Forgery.

Browning was arrested by deputies of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and bond was set at $35,000 cash, with 10% allowed.

The State Auditor Nicole Galloway released this statement after charges were filed; “Betrayal of public trust demands immediate action to restore the confidence of taxpayers. I appreciate the quick response by Prosecuting Attorney Annie Gibson in light of my audit last month. My office stands ready to assist law enforcement as this case proceeds.”
