Oesch Wins District American Legion Oratorical Contest
The winner of the District 2 American Legion Oratorical contest on Saturday in Brookfield is a senior at Southwest, Meredith Oesch. The American Legion’s 85th annual High School Oratorical Scholarship Program included each contestant delivering prepared talks lasting no less than five minutes and no longer than six minutes on an aspect of the US Constitution of their choosing. Then they each delivered an additional extemporaneous address on the 21st Amendment regarding the end of prohibition, a subject randomly drawn just five minutes before speaking.
Daniel Falcon, a sophomore at Brookfield R-III High School, was named runner-up and will be the alternate in the Zone Contest in Hannibal on January 20th and compete with winners from Districts 1, 8 and 9.
As the winner of the District contest, Oesch, the District organization will award her a $250 scholarship, and local Vern R Glick American Legion Post 25 will award another $1000 for advancing to District, and now to Zone.
