District Wrestling This Weekend

The Chillicothe Hornets Boys wrestling team is scheduled to compete in the Class 2 District Tournament at Excelsior Springs this weekend. The Tournament is scheduled to begin this evening (Friday) and conclude on Saturday.
Cameron and Chillicothe are expected to be two of the favorites in the 14-teams field. Recently KCHI had a chance to talk with three Seniors on the Hornets team.
138 pounder Lavery Jones spend some time this season ranked in the top ten of his weight division. Jones says he had a very proud career moment this season.

Jones says he wrestled several very tough opponents this season. He says last year’s state runner up Christian Dixon from Benton will be his toughest test.
Chillicothe’s 220 pound Senior Matt Callen is currently ranked #5 in the state in his class. He says the Seniors on the Hornets team are proud of their contribution to the program’s success.

Callen says his toughest opponent will be from KC Lincoln Prep, a wrestler that Callen knows nothing about.
Chillicothe’s best bet for a state medal this year might be 285 pound Senior Keegan Valdez. He beat a state ranked wrestler from Mexico this season, and lost to Brookfield’s two time state champion Brooks Baker 1-0 in Chillicothe.
Valdez says wrestling quality regular season opponents will help him in the post season.

Valdez thinks he will face Jacob Dowell from Benton in the district finals.
The 14 teams in the District tournament will be: Benton, Cameron, KC Center, KC Central Academy of Excellence, Chillicothe, Excelsior Springs, KC Guadalupe Centers Charter, Lafayette, KC Lincoln College Prep, Maryville, KC Northeast, Pembroke Hill, Savannah, KC Southeast, and KC St. Pius X.
