Shipping Food Gifts? Pack Them Well

If you are shipping food items to family or friends this holiday season, the USDA urges caution and provides a few tips.  Janell Goodwin with USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline says make a plan.

Goodwin says don’t send items at the end of the week as they may sit in a warehouse over the weekend and frozen items may begin thawing.

She says pack them well.

And when you are doing all that packing, don’t forget to put your food items inside or you have to start all over again.

Finally, make sure you let the recipient know a package is coming to them.

If you receive a package marked keep refrigerated, open it immediately and check the contents to ensure it is still safe to consume.
