Area residents are receiving calls on their cell phones that indicate they are coming from 911.  Chillicothe Police Chief Jon Maples says, Unfortunately, the callers called 911 back to ask if the department called them.  He says that has been tying up emergency lines.  Maples says it is understandable given what had shown up.

He says the callers are doing what is known as  CALL SPOOFING. For whatever reason either an individual or an automated device has mimicked our emergency number and is calling customers of a specific cell phone provider.  If you receive a caller ID showing “911” disregard it.

Maples says when they have to contact people from the Police Department they use regular business lines and do NOT dial out from 911.
