A traffic stop on an Illinois man resulted in a trial and two days in jail. Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox says a jury trial was held January 31st for a man that was stopped for 100 miles an hour in a 65 zone. Thirty-four-year-old Calvin Walker II of Illinois was stopped by Corporal Clint Gilliland of the Missouri Highway Patrol. Walker told the officer and the court he was running late and attempting to get to a location in Kansas.
Walker requested a jury trial for the citation. Cox says the process includes notifying about 50 prospective jurors, who meet at the Livingston County Courthouse where 12 are selected to hear the case.
When both sides presented their case, it was handed over to the jury, and Cox says after a few minutes of deliberation, the jury convicted Walker of the speeding violation. Judge Michael Leamer sentenced Walker to the standard of 2 days in jail and assessed the costs of the jury trial.. Cox says this is a typical sentence for the offense, along with a fine, which would have been less than the cost of the jury trial.
Walker was taken to the Daviess Dekalb Regional Jail to serve his sentence, immediately following the trial.
