The number of “Real” Christmas Trees that were cut and brought to the lots nationally this year is lower than in recent years. The USDA says that is due to the supply of the trees resulting from an attitude swing several years ago.
National Christmas Tree Association President Tim O’Connor says the reason for fewer trees goes back 10 years.
Unlike field crops, it takes 10 years from planting to harvest before the tree growers see any profit from the trees and there is a lot of handwork over that time to shape the tree and make it appealing.
O’Connor says due to the lower number of trees at commercial lots, you may see prices up a few dollars from last year.
