High Speed Wrong Way Driver Arrested After Traveling Through Three Counties

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department reports a driver was going the wrong way on US 36 Friday afternoon.  The deputy was responding to a nonurgent call near Wheeling at about 2:30 pm and was nearly struck by the vehicle heading west in the eastbound lanes.  The deputy gave chase and was attempting to warn other drivers by having his emergency lights on.  The deputy says numerous vehicles, fortunately, avoided head-on traffic collision from the suspect driver that was at times doing more than 100 miles per hour.

Just west of Chillicothe west of US 65 and Chillicothe the driver jumped the median and continued on at a very high rate of speed in the westbound lanes of 36.  Dispatch notified the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Caldwell County Sheriff.  The Deputy ended the chase west of Utica as the vehicle was getting out of direct sight.

At about 3:03 pm, troopers reported the arrest of 58-year-old Robert L Shiflett of Anabel, MO for alleged speeding, 108 miles per hour in a 65 zone, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest by fleeing.  He was taken to Cameron Regional Medical Center and released for treatment.

Sheriff Steve Cox says they will be collecting information and will also seek criminal charges in Livingston County.
