Dry and windy conditions contributed to numerous grass fires in Grundy County Saturday. The Rural Grundy County fire crews used four brush trucks, two pumpers and a tanker to control the fires that were reported over a six-hour period.
A cigarette thrown from a vehicle may have been the cause of a hayfield fire on Route Y, northeast of Trenton. That fire burned 10 acres and 20 round bales of hay.
A cigarette was also the likely source of a fire on Route Z and Highway 6, where 5 acres were burned.
A fire at the Marvin Knapp property burned about 40 acres and required firefighters to return a couple of times because the fire would restart. That fire started as a controlled burn.
Nearby, 100 acres that were burned Friday, restarted twice on Saturday.
There was also a fire that started as a CRP burn near Highway 6 and PP. Jamesport Fire Department assisted with that fire as Grundy County was already on a call.
