Smithville pulled away late in the game to beat the Chillicothe Lady Hornets
46-36 in the opening round of the Savannah Tournament.
The lead was never more than six points until midway through the fourth quarter. Chillicothe tied the game late in the third quarter but Smithville outscored the Lady Hornets 13-5 in the final quarter.
Coach Darren Smith said the girls played great most of the game.
Coach Smith felt his team wore out late in the 4th quarter. Chillicothe was led by Essie Hicks with 12, Jessica Reeter with 11, Brooke Horton with 5, Joli Bonderer with 4, Lucy Reeter and Selby Miller each with 2 and playing time for Ellie Barnett, Clara Leamer and Sophia Luetticke.
Chillicothe plays Platte County in the consolation semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30pm. The Lady Pirates lost to St Joseph Benton 58-23.
