A Chimney Fire resulted in damage to a home at 398 Southwest Elm Lane in Trenton. The Grundy County Rural Fire Department responded to the call at about 8:20 pm and arrived to find light smoke and smoldering embers inside a wall near the fireplace. According to the report, the homeowner had noticed the smoke and used a fire extinguisher to control the fire until the fire department arrived. Firefighters used a water can extinguisher to put out the fire and cut away the charred wood.
The fire crew was on the scene for about an hour.
The cause of the fire was a cracked flue pipe that allowed heat from the woodstove to overheat wood and insulation until it began to smolder and eventually catch fire.
