Sumner Academy, a Class 4 Soccer team from Kansas, was too much for the Hornets. They beat Chillicothe 2-1 in the first day of the KC Cup tournament.
Sumner Academy had the hot offense with 16 shots on Goal. The Hornets Goalkeeper Daniel Hedrick and the team defenders stopped 14 of the shots. Sumner scored in the 16th minute when a ball went off Chillicothe and into the Hornets net. They scored again in the 20th minute. Chillicothe answered two minutes later off a Chace Corbin goal with a Mason Baxter assist. There was no scoring in the second half.
Coach Tim Cunningham called the game “another spirited effort by the Hornets against a very skilled and talented Quarterfinal team in Class 4 from Kansas.”
Next on the Chillicothe school is a pool match Tuesday against Raytown South at Van Horn Field at 5:45.
