The Chillicothe Lady Hornets softball team won the program’s 10th district championship and first since 2016 with a 2-1 win over Kirksville on Saturday afternoon.
Kirksville scored in the top of the third inning, but Chillicothe tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth off a Sophia Luetticke double followed by a Kinlei Boley fly ball to left field to score Luetticke and take a 2-1 lead.
Kirksville threatened in the sixth inning but Boley struck out the batter at the plate for the third out.
Boley took the win, allowing five hits, all singles, with nine strike outs and one walk.
Chillicothe will face Holden in the first round of the State Tournament on Wednesday. Holden beat Chillicothe 11-4 in the Greater Kansas City Tournament on August 28th. Since that loss, Chillicothe has won 25 of their last 27 games. Holden is 20 and 7 while Chillicothe is 28 and 4. The game will be at 508 West Chestnut street in Holden at 6:00p7, on Wednesday.
