Chillicothe High School baseball was in St. Joseph Wednesday night taking on Lafayette High School at Phil Welch Stadium.
It was the offensive explosion that Manager Josh Lisle has been looking for from his team as the Hornets had a base runner in all seven innings and also scored runs in 5 straight innings tally 13 runs in total.
“We had plenty of baserunners. We put pressure on them with stealing and we had a lot of good hits. We played very very well offensively,” said Manager Josh Lisle.
Justin Pyle made his first start of the year and was strong through three innings. In the 4, he ran into some trouble and finished the day only allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 3.
“He pitched extremely well the firs three innings; didn’t allow much at all. The fourth inning he got a little flat, and that’s till due to a limited pitch count. That’s his second time on the mound this year. So we’ll try to stretch him out a little bit longer each time,” said Lisle.
The Hornets offense made waste of the Fighting Irish pitching staff as they shuffled through 6 different pitchers.
Chillicothe racked up 8 stolen bases in their aggressive approach to base running. The offense was also aided by the seven errors committed by Lafayette.
“On the bus ride over, I was talking to my assistant and I was like ‘Man, it would really nice to go and get four, five, six runs early’. So we put on something and talked to them (the players) about it and overall 1-9 we were just so much more aggressive on the bases,” said Lisle.
Brock Ward and Gage Leamer led the way on offense each going 3 for 5, and the Hornets powered past the Fighting Irish 13-7 to advance to 2-5 on the season.
Baseball plays next in Plattsburg on Friday night.
