Hornets baseball was in action Monday night when they faced district-leading Savannah at Shaffer Park.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Hornets struck first with three runs on 3 hits and an error.
Max Wagers walked to start the inning then later stole second base and advanced to third on the throw down. Three batters later, Brock Miller tallied a single to Wagers home.
Miller and Brock Ward would later score from a Wyatt Brandsgaard single and a Landon Winder double, respectively.
Savannah struck back in the top of the second when Ethan Dennis’ doubled plated Ethan Dudeck to make it a 3-1 game.
Chillicothe’s offense wouldn’t collect another hit after the first, but in the bottom of the 4th, Landon Winder was hit by a pitch. The Hornets used situational hitting to get Winder home. Brandgaard sacrificed himself with a bunt to move Winder to second, and Gabe Hansen’s sac fly was deep enough for Winder to tag to home. It was 4-1 CHS.
The starter Max Wagers was great in 5 innings of work, allowing one run on five hits and four walks. He worked out of lots of base traffic including a 2-out bases-loaded jam in the 5th when he struck out Dudeck to get out of it.
“Max had his second game in a row that he came out and just gave us everything he’s got. He gave us a really good chance to win,” said Manager Josh Lisle
The Hornets held a lead the entire game, but in the top of the 7th, with two outs, Heisman Lafave punched a 2-RBI single off of Justin Pyle through the left side to give Savannah a 5-4 lead.
In the last half of the 7th, Chillicothe went down in order.
Savannah’s starter, Gabe Piper, was tremendous going the distance on 103 pitches. He allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. He racked up six K’s.
The Hornets dropped a heartbreaker to Savannah 5-4 and drop to 3 and 7 on the season.
“We played a really good game for six and two thirds. Offensively we’re fine. We gotta try and be a little more consistent throughout the middle of the game and not get too laxed at the plate when we get a lead. I think we only finished with three hits, which seems unreal,” said Lisle.
The Hornets will go again on Wednesday when Cameron pays a visit at 4:30.
