On Monday night, Chillicothe girls soccer hit the pitch for a wet one against Benton of St. Joseph.
The rain made it difficult for players to judge the weight needed to accurately deliver a pass. To some extent, grabbing a solid footing to deliver a solid shot on goal was tough as well.
Regulation was filled with plenty of scoring chances for both sides, but neither offense could break the 0-0 deadlock in the first 80 minutes of the game.
In the first half of the game, Benton had a golden opportunity to score on a corner kick when CHS goal keeper, Hadley Beemer, got caught up on players in the box. But the Lady Hornets came up big by standing tall in front of multiple shots turning them away.
The Hornets best chance at a goal came in the second half when Delanie Kieffer missed a header on a corner kick from Lucy Reeter; that, likely, would won the game. It missed just above the Cardinals crossbar.
The game made it through the 1st overtime without a goal tallied for either side. There really wasn’t a great chance for either side to knock one home in the 10-minute period.
Then in the 2nd overtime, Benton’s Peyton Anderson recovered a rebound off of a direct kick and fired a perfectly labeled crossing pass that found the back of the net in the 92nd minute.
Benton would go on to beat Chilli 1-0 in double overtime and move them up the ladder in the District 8 standings with the district tournament inching closer.
Chillicothe’s girls soccer team has struggled with larger, more physical teams this year, but they battled against Benton and didn’t back down to the fight.
Beemer in goal for Chillicothe had another great night coming up with six saves
The Lady Hornets travel west to Cameron tonight to square off with the winless Dragons.
