CHILLICOTHE – Des Moines scored five times in the first inning Thursday, propelling them to an 11-1 7-inning win over Chillicothe at Shaffer Park.
The victory was the Peak Prospects’ first of the season. Thursday’s game came on the heels of losing back-to-back games by 10 runs.
Des Moines’ first six hitters of the first inning reached base, five of which would come around to score. Nick Prater smacked a gap-shot double to score the first two.
Trey Castille turned in the best start for any Prospect pitcher so far this season, going six innings deep and fanning seven Muscat hitters. The only run he allowed was in the fourth after an error, and eventually, a balk.
Leighton Jenkins had a 3-for-5 night for Des Moines, who hit more doubles in Thursday’s game than they had in the first five games of the season.
The Mudcats mustered just three hits in the game, one of which came from Austin Wright, who finally broke his slump with his first hit of the summer.
With the loss, the Mudcats fall to 1-5.
The Mudcats are back at Shaffer Park Friday to battle the Joplin Outlaws in the first of a two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. C.T.
