Three died and several people were injured when a passenger train derailed Monday afternoon near Mendon. The Amtrak Southwest Chief, traveling from California to Chicago derailed southwest of Mendon at 12:42 pm. The train was carrying 243 passengers when it struck a dumptruck at a crossing and derailed two engines and eight-passenger cars.
The fatalities include the truck driver and two from the train.
Many with injuries were taken to the Mendon School and were transported to hospitals from there.
Emergency services from Chariton, Randolph, Linn, and Livingston Counties responded to assist.
