Amtrak officials are releasing additional information about Monday’s deadly crash and derailment near Mendon. The Missouri Highway Patrol says three people died, including two passengers and the driver of the truck that was struck at the uncontrolled grade crossing. Amtrak says there were approximately 275 passengers and 12 crew members onboard. (the number of passengers varies as all of the data is collected.) The train pulled by three engines included seven passenger cars and a baggage car. All but one engine left the tracks and most had turned onto their side.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has activated, and Amtrak says they will fully support the NTSB with its investigation.
Many local and regional emergency services departments responded to the scene and assisted with the rescue, treatment and transport to a safe location in Mendon or to hospitals as far away as Columbia and even Chillicothe.
