JOPLIN – Joplin scored in every inning but the third in game one and blew out Chillicothe 17-7, then used a late RBI single from Carson Johnson to win game two 8-6, sweeping the Mudcats in a doubleheader Tuesday at Joe Becker Stadium.
The first game was the resumption of a suspended game in June, which was tied 6-6 in the top of the third inning.
Mudcat hurler Cole Mammenga was roughed up in his appearance, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits.
The Outlaws pounded out 13 hits, led by Cade Lott who ripped two doubles and two RBIs.
Cole White got the win for Joplin, despite giving up seven runs in five innings. Six of those came when the game started in June.
In the second game, both pitching staffs struggled again. Jake Young lasted just four innings for the Mudcats, allowing seven runs on eight hits and walking four.
In the fifth inning, the Mudcats took their second lead of the game on a bases-loaded single from Luis Ramirez that ended up scoring three after a throwing error from Outlaw first baseman Matt Campbell.
Immediately after in the bottom of the frame, Joplin responded with a two-run Joe Ricchio double following a pair of walks tied the game. Later in the inning, Carson Johnson knocked in Ricchio with a single, and that’s all Joplin would need to win game two.
Harold Baez closed it with a four-out save, inducing two ground balls and two fly balls to seal the victory.
Chillicothe falls to 10-18 overall on the season.
The Mudcats return to Joplin Wednesday to battle the Outlaws again. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. C.T.
