The Chillicothe Hornets Football team lost to Maryville on Friday night by a score of 45-14. This was the first Midland Empire Conference game of the season for both teams, and the Spoofhounds were able to come out on top.
The trend of early craziness in Hornets football games continued this week with a Cayden Potter fumble on the first play from scrimmage. That gave Maryville a short field, leading to a one-yard QB sneak from junior Spoofhound quarterback, Derek Quinlin, for the first touchdown of the game.
Chillicothe responded with a long, methodical drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown rush from Silas Midgyett. A botched snap on the extra point led to a miraculous two-point conversion on a broken play. Griff Bonderer was the holder and was able to find freshman Jaishon White in the back of the end-zone for the conversion giving Chillicothe the 8-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Maryville responded with two quick touchdowns on a 31-yard pass from Quinlin to Wyatt Garner and a one-yard touchdown run from senior running back Cooper Loe. This gave the Spoofhounds a 21-8 lead heading into the halftime break.
The first play from scrimmage in the second half was a big one. Maryville running back, Cooper Loe, ran a wheel route out of the backfield and Quinlin found him streaking down the right sideline for a 56-yard touchdown.
Chillicothe spent the rest of the game trying to claw their way back, and their best chance came in the third quarter on a Brock Miller pick-six. The senior linebacker/safety corralled a deflected ball at the Maryville 30-yard line and returned it back to the house cutting the deficit to 28-14.
It was all Spoofhounds after that, though. A safety on a blocked punt increased the lead to 30-14, and then quarterback Derek Quinlin and company just kept on churning. Maryville ended up winning by the final score of 45-14.
Chillicothe Football is back in action on Friday, September 16th for their homecoming game against Cameron at 7 pm.
