The Chillicothe Hornets and Lady Hornets track and field team had several athletes and relay teams competing in the Class 3 State Finals in Jefferson City over the weekend.
Chillicothe posted their best results in the relay races. The girls 4 x 800 meter team finished 2nd place overall with a time of 9:46.9 and just half a second behind the winning team, El Dorado Springs. The Lady Hornets relay team was comprised of Kayanna Cranmer, Lyla Beetsma, Jolie Bonderer and Lydia Bonderer. Freshman Lydia Bonderer also ran in the individual 800 and finished in 4th at 2:18. The Lady Hornets recorded other top 10 finishes in the 4 x 400 relay in 8th place, Sadie Midgyett was 8th in the discus with a throw of 34.42 meters, Kayanna Cranmer was 9th in the 400 at 1:00, and Jolie Bonderer was 10th in the 1600 at 5:20. Both relay teams, Cranmer in the 400, Jolie Bonderer in the 1600 and Lydia Bonderer in the 800 set school record times in the process. As a team, the Chillicothe Lady Hornets placed 21st in Class 3 with 15 points.
The Hornets boys team also recorded several school records, and top 10 finishes highlighted by their 4 x 800 relay team. Jonathan Sanchez, Laik Graham, Cain Evans and Luke Thompson recorded a school best 8:08 which finished 6th in the Class 3 State Finals. The Hornets 4 x 400 team was 7th, and the 4 x 100 team finished 10th. Individually, Bo Smith in discus was 9th with a 42.93 meter throw, Silas Midgyett was 10th in the 100 completing the sprint in just 11.1 seconds, and Cain Evans was 10th in the 1600 with a 4:29. All three Hornets boys relay teams set a school record as did Midgyett in the 100, and Evans in the 1600. The Chillicothe Hornets boys track and field team ended the season placing 39th with 5 points.
