The Chillicothe Lady Hornets were looking to respond from their loss against Centralia when taking on Waukee Northwest at Holiday Hoops hosted by NCMC. Coach Darren Smith and the Lady Hornets basketball team knew it would be a challenging task. Waukee Northwest was the only team to beat Chillicothe in the regular season last year.
The Wolves attacked right away, scoring the first 8 points of the game before Lydia Bonderer tried to settle Chillicothe down with a three pointer. The deep ball was Waukee Northwest’s specialty however, as the team from Iowa knocked down 11 triples. Between the sharp shooting and the aggressive defense that forced Chillicothe into numerous turnovers and tough shots, Waukee Northwest opened up a 39-9 halftime lead.
The experience of Lyla Beetsma and Liz Oliver helped the Lady Hornets continue to fight and show improvements in the 2nd half, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Waukee Northwest won the Holiday Hoops matchup 59-27.
Chillicothe is now 7-2 on the year and will play next on January 3rd at South Harrison.
