Walk-a-thon Leads Mudcats to Blowout Win

A season-high 12 walks, along with nine stolen bases lifted the Chillicothe Mudcats to an 11-3 win over the Nevada Griffons on Monday night.

Facing a Griffons team that had lost eight of their last nine games, the Mudcats laid the hammer down early. Making his second start of the season, Joshua Rego struck out the side in the top of the first inning.

Nevada hit Chillicothe’s leadoff batter Rafael Calcaño to start the bottom of the first. After a stolen base, Calcaño scored on the first of four Griffon errors on the night. Derin Doucet doubled in another run to put the Mudcats ahead 2-0.

The only run allowed by Rego in five innings scored in the second, but it was not nearly enough to keep up. Chillicothe scored a run in their half of the second, three in the third and fourth innings, and two runs in the fifth to take a dominating 11-1 lead.

The biggest innings were supplied with plenty of walks. Nevada gave three free passes in the third, and walked four straight Mudcats to lead off the fourth.

It got so bad, that with no outs in the fourth, the Griffons turned to a position player to pitch. Nevada relied on backup catchers and infielders, none of which had pitched this summer, to throw the final five innings of the game.

Two Griffons runs in the sixth did just enough to prevent their second straight run-rule loss, and forced the game to go a full nine innings.

Chillicothe local Justin Pyle tossed three innings in his first appearance against a M.I.N.K opponent, and Brock Falor threw a scoreless ninth to close it out.

With the win, the Mudcats improved to 3-1 against Nevada this season. They are back at Shaffer Park on Tuesday for the annual game against the U.S. Military Wardogs.
