Three incidents where people had gone around barricades Friday morning could result in charges or citations for the drivers.
Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox says at about 9:00 am, deputies were called by a railroad crew for a person stuck on a levee south of Chillicothe. Cox says for some unknown reason the man decided he could drive his car over the levees through the flood waters and get to 65 highway. He was found a couple of miles west of US 65 and was wanting his car towed off the levee.
The car remains on the side of the levee, surrounded by flood water. The property owner assisted in getting the man off the levee. He could be cited for Trespassing, Careless and Imprudent Driving for leaving the roadway and violating the road closed barriers, and no proof of auto insurance.
At about 10:00 am, a deputy reported seeing a vehicle traveling east on US 36 west of Chillicothe near Coon Creek. The highway west of Chillicothe remains shut down due to flooding. When he saw the deputy he turned his vehicle around and drove west in the eastbound closed lanes, where they were met by a deputy at Utica. The New Mexico driver is being cited for Careless and Imprudent Driving for violating the barricades closing 36 at Utica.
Early Friday morning, the sheriff’s office was notified of a semi that had gone through the barricades that closed Liv 216 and Route V to prevent people from driving into the flood water, while trying to get around the flooding on US 36. The driver was demanding assistance from a deputy in backing the semi out of the closed road. The driver could be cited for careless and imprudent driving once the incident report has been completed.
