Scammers were nearly successful in targeting a local resident. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department reports the intended victim was called by someone claiming the victim’s credit card had been charged nearly $1,200 and conned the victim into allowing the caller to gain access to his computer. This was supposedly done to allow his computer to be cleaned of whatever virus or damage done by a hacker.
The scammer also obtained intended victims checking account information.
The report states the local resident nearly sent a payment of $600 to the scammer.
The intended victim quickly learned this was not right and the person was only trying to steal money and personal information. The bank was quickly notified and steps were taken to secure the person’s identity and money.
