If for any reason the Internal Revenue Service wants to contact you, you can expect that first contact to be made through the US Postal Service. Micheal Devine from the IRS says it is highly unlikely the IRS would contact you initially in any other manner.
Devine says if you get an email claiming to be from the IRS, that is also probably a scam and you can help to try and catch the scammers.
Devine says if it doesn’t feel right or sound right, trust your instincts. He also says like most other legitimate businesses, they won’t ask for payment in unconventional ways.
If you ever receive a notice from the IRS and you want to check and see if it is legitimate, call them at 800-829-1040, 800-TAX-1040.
