The Chillicothe Lady Hornets softball team finished with three wins and two losses in the 24-team Greater Kansas City Tournament, hosted by William Chrisman High School.
After going 1-and-1 in pool play Friday with a 7-1 loss to Grain Valley and a 6-3 win over Pleasant Hill, the Lady Hornets played in the “Silver” tournament bracket Saturday with seven other schools that also finished second in their pools.
On Saturday Chillicothe opened with a 13-6 win over Odessa. Sophia Luetticke led the team with a single, double and triple and two RBI. Three Chillicothe pitchers combined to allow six runs off eight hits with just one walk.
In the tournament semifinals, The Lady Hornets blanked Centralia 8 to 0. They picked up ten hits, led by two doubles and a single from Kinlie Boley who also had three RBI and scored a run.
In the finals of the silver bracket tournament against Holden, the Eagles scored two in the first and one in the third. Chillicothe bounced back to score four in the bottom of the third, but Holden countered with five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Holden was effective at the plate, scoring 11 runs off 18 hits with two walks. The Holden team went 18 of 36 at the plate.
Hope Helton had a double and single to lead the Lady Hornets effort.
Chillicothe Coach Lee Rucker said the Lady Hornets “entered the tournament to see strong competition early in the season and prepare for our Conference and District schedule down the road.”
He said the team played hard all weekend and spent a lot of time together.
Rucker said he saw a lot of good things and saw some areas that need improvement.
