Beginning this Sunday, when you dial that 7-digit phone number, you will get a recording letting you know that you will need to dial an area code to complete the call.
The change is due to the nationwide 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline that will begin July 16th next year.
The FCC reminds those making calls on both Cell Phones and Land Lines, you will need to dial the area code plus the 7 digit number. That impacts 83 area codes in 37 states. In Missouri, the area codes affected include 314, 417, 660, and 816.
Home and business phone users are reminded to update their speed dial numbers and calling lists to include the local area code
During the transition to 988, anyone who needs helps should continue to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK) and through online chats.
