Chillicothe High School’s oldest Boys Basketball rivalry returns on Friday Night when Chillicothe travels to Trenton High School. The series dates back to February 1911 in what is believed to be the first game in Chillicothe basketball history, according to KCHI Sports Director Randy Dean.
Trenton won that first game 33 to 31. A newspaper account stated Chillicothe Center Edgar Jones was an incalculable asset to his team. The next meeting between the teams wasn’t until 1924 when Chillicothe beat Trenton twice in the season.
This Friday night the teams will meet for the 200th time, the longest series between Chillicothe and any single team.
Trenton’s last win over Chillicothe in Boys Basketball was 2014. The highest scoring game in the series was an 86-80 Chillicothe shoot out win in 1971.
One family has a special interest in the game. Russell Bland was a two-time all state player for Trenton in 1972 and 73 and went on to become an NAIA All American basketball player. This year Russell’s Grandson Wyatt Brandsgaard is a starter for the Chillicothe Hornets. KCHI will broadcast the game as part of Friday’s Girls/Boys doubleheader at Trenton. Chillicothe leads the boys series all time with 129 wins against 70 losses.
