Two buildings were a total loss in the fire Wednesday in Brookfield. Fire Chief Larry Flynn says they were first notified of the fire at 305 North Main at about 7:20 am and the residents of the apartments in the building were being evacuated when they arrived. Flynn says they were initially able to get the fire under control, but the fire had gotten into some hidden areas in the building.
They called for assistance from Chillicothe and Marceline.
He says the fire spread to adjacent buildings.
One resident had minor burns while evacuating from the building and one firefighter had burns from tar. Both were treated at the scene.
Demolition of the two buildings was begun Wednesday night for safety.
The State Fire Marshall is on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire.
