Chillicothe High School’s baseball team is competing in the Marshall Tournament out at Marshall High School.
The round robin style tournament placed the Hornets in pool 2 with Northwest and Summit Christian. Results from Friday’s pool play would determine the seeding of each team for Saturday.
Game 1
In game one, the 0-2 Hornets drew the 5-1 Northwest Mustangs. Manager Josh Lisle sent Max Wagers to man the mound.
Northwest jumped out to an early 2-0 in the top of the first inning before adding 3 more runs in the top of the third. No names were provided by the Mustangs, but their #20 had a 3 for 4 day at the plate. He plated 2 runs and scored two of his own as well as leading all hitters in total bases with 5.
Wagers lasted 4 innings and sacrificed six hits, and 5 earned runs. He also struck out five.
The Hornets were able to scratch their first run across in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brock Ward doubled to lead off the half inning and was then moved to third on a ground out by Alijah Hibner. An error at third base allowed Ward to trot home for the tally.
The scoring ceased until the 7th when the Hornets and Mustangs traded runs. Justin Pyle had a leadoff single and later scored on an error on a Wyatt Brandsgaard fly ball.
In game 1, the Hornets fell 6-2 to Northwest of Hughesville. Ward led the way offensively for Chillicothe going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Wagers and Pyle added one single each.
Game 2
Chillicothe, now 0-3, squared off with the 3-0-1 Summit Christian Academy Eagles in game 2.
Brock Ward was sent as the starting pitcher to face off with Summit Christian’s Nathan Bartlett.
Ward was plagued by four walks in two innings as he allowed just one hit and struck out two. He did let up two runs, only one was earned.
SCA struck first in the bottom of the second by plating those two runs.
The Eagles’ Garrett Ferguson was the engine of the offense in the lead-off spot. He was 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored as well as a walk.
The Hornets Justin Pyle came in for a four-inning relief appearance in which he surrendered six hits, two earned runs and two walks, but racked up two K’s.
The Eagles would add those two runs in the bottom of the 6th plated on a double by Ferguson.
Summit Christian’s Bartlett had 16 strike outs and gave up just one hit in 6.1 innings of work. He also helped his caused by going 2 for 3 with a run and a walk.
Brock Miller collected the Hornets only hit while Gage Leamer and Cayden Potter each earned walks. Potter had two steals.
The Hornets dropped the game 0-4 and were given the third seed heading in to Saturday’s portion of the tournament.
