After consecutive losses on Friday, the Hornets baseball team was given the third seed coming out of pool 2.
The tournament was set up so that both three seeds would play for 5th, both two seeds would play for 3rd and both one seeds would battle for 1st.
That put the Hornets in a matchup with the Tigers of Versailles to decide 5th place on Saturday.
The game was deadlocked at 0-0 for the first four innings of the game. Gage Leamer worked himself out of an early bases-loaded situation by striking out two batters to keep things knotted up.
Leamer’s outing ended after letting up the first two runs of the game to Versailles; one on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice and the other on a single punched through the infield. Alijah Hibner came in relief after 4.2 innings pitched five hits, six strike outs and two unearned runs for Leamer.
Down 2-0 in the bottom half of the 5th. Cayden Potter led it off with a walk before picking up his third steal of the tournament. Potter’s steal put him in position to reach third on a base hit to left field by Hagan Atchinson. Potter scored on an error by the shortstop to make it a 2-1 game heading to the 6th.
Hibner nailed down the 6th not allowing a hit to the Tigers.
With the 1 hour and 45 minute time limit approaching and the Hornets playing as the home team, Chillicothe needed two runs to win.
The inning started with a walk for the Hornets from Brock Miller before Max Wagers sent a ball to right field for a double, scoring Miller.
With the game now tied at two, Cayden Potter stepped to the plate and smacked a double to center field that walked the Hornets off as winners, 3-2.
The Hornets picked up their first win of the season over Versailles and took home 5th place in the Marshall Tournament.
