With the area students returning to school, nutritious meals are available through the schools. Parents may pay for meals for their children or they may apply for free and reduced meals through the school administration.
Another choice is to pack a lunch for your child. Meredith Carothers with USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says packing that lunch in a brown paper bag is not recommended.
Those might include, fresh whole fruit, chips, granola, or a peanut butter sandwich.
Carothers says that a brown bag won’t keep perishable items cold.
Use an insulated lunch box or bag and some sort of ice pack to keep items cold.
In addition, remember to pack a nutritious lunch that includes items your child will not just throw out.
