Drivers – Watch For School Buses and Children Walking

School starts for area schools next week and that means drivers will see school buses taking kids to and from school.  Sergeant Shane Hux from the Missouri Highway Patrol reminds drivers of their responsibilities when the school bus is stopped with lights flashing and the stop arm extended.

On a two-lane road you must stop, on a divided highway
you need to stop for the bus traveling in the same direction.

If the four-lane road is not divided by a median, you would stop just as you would for a two-lane road.

Hux says students who are walking to school need to use sidewalks when they are available.  If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road.

Walk facing traffic.

He says when crossing the roads, cross at the intersections and use crosswalks when available.  Make sure the traffic sees you before you start to cross.

Drivers should expect children may cross at any time.

They may dart out at any time.

Drivers should allow for some extra time to allow for the bus traffic, both in the morning and in the afternoon.
