Mudcats Overpowered by Mustangs Again

Following consecutive off-days for the third time this season, the Chillicothe Mudcats returned to Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph on Wednesday night to take on the first-place Mustangs. With 11 hits, St. Joseph beat the Mudcats in an 8-3 runaway to further their lead in the standings.

Chillicothe did strike first with a run in the second inning. With runners on second and third base and no out, Derin Doucet drove in the run from third, but the man from second was thrown out at the plate. Doucet would later be thrown out at home as well, trying to score from second on a single.

After picking up a run on those three hits, the Mudcats led 1-0 at the end of two innings. A four-run Mustangs third quickly turned the tables from Chillicothe’s favor.

After allowing a lead-off single, Mudcats starting pitcher Max Wagers forced a potential double-play grounder. The throw from shortstop missed second base, and ended up all the way behind first. The costly error gave St. Joseph runners at second and third with no out.

It then turned to the top of the Mustangs’ staggering lineup, who strung together three more hits, two of them doubles, to make it 4-1 St. Joseph. Wagers held them off in the fourth, but allowed one more run in the fifth. He finished with 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings, with his defense behind him making two errors and logging a passed ball during his outing.

Down 5-1 in the sixth, the Mudcats would bring the tying run to the plate with a bases-loaded and no out situation. Tanner Sears struck out, John Spoto grounded in a run, and Doucet flew out to get the Mustangs out of the jam.

Nine Mustangs batted in the seventh, scoring three to go ahead 8-2. Chillicothe got one back in the ninth, but went hitless the final two innings to lose 8-3.

With five straight wins, St. Joseph is 5-0 in league play. That is a far cry from the Mudcats, who drop to 0-5 against M.I.N.K. competition. They will travel to Sedalia to face the second-place Bombers Thursday night.
