Area residents are reminded to use caution when disposing of batteries, particularly lithium batteries. These should not be placed in your trash.
The City of Cameron recently had a trash truck fire that was determined to be from the disposal of a lithium battery.
These batteries, commonly found in cell phones, laptops, and power tools, can spark fires when crushed or exposed to heat in garbage trucks and landfills.
Instead of throwing them in the trash, recommendations include taking lithium batteries to designated recycling drop-off sites or hazardous waste collection events. Proper disposal not only prevents fires but also protects the environment from harmful chemicals.
