The Chillicothe Hornets football team hosted Southeast of Kansas City Friday night. Both teams entered the contest looking for their first win of the season at 0-4.
Chillicothe marched down the field on the opening drive and scored on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Landon Bailey to Cooper Robinson. It would turn into a big night for both of those players, as they connected on another touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Bailey also had two rushing scores in the first half.
Jaishon White made his presence felt on both sides of the ball. Ripping the ball away from the Knights to force and recover a fumble that set up a Bailey rushing touchdown in the first quarter, then in the 2nd quarter blowing up a play resulting in a loss of 13 yards for Southeast which gave the Hornets the ball back with under 30 seconds to play before halftime. On the first play of the possession, Bailey launched a ball down the seem to White who secured it at the goal-line for six points. Bailey’s three passing and two rushing touchdowns had Chillicothe ahead 33-6 at the half.
The Knights lone touchdown came on a kickoff return in the 2nd quarter when Trey Thomas broke loose for an 80 yard special teams score.
To open the 3rd quarter Drake Swift needed two plays to go 50 yards to paydirt, then added on the two point conversion himself. Chillicothe scored one final time in the 4th quarter when Gunnar Hawkins blocked a Southeast punt in the endzone and it was recover by Henry Hurtgen. Chillicothe’s leading rusher on the season, Hurtgen, totaled over 100 yards on the ground to go along with his punt block recovery touchdown.
Defensively, the Hornets held Southeast to a net of 0 yards from scrimmage and only two first downs all game. Chillicothe dominated in all phases to win 47-6, improving to 1-4 on the season. The Hornets will host Lafayette on Homecoming night next Friday.
