The Chillicothe Hornets boys basketball team travelled to Marshall on Friday night to take on the Owls. Both teams entered with winning records and the Hornets were looking to extend their 4 game winning streak.
Marshall started fast on their home floor, leading 7-0. Chillicothe managed to tie the game at 12 but the Owls held a 14-12 edge at the end of the first quarter. In the 2nd quarter Marshall once again pushed the lead out to 7 at 22-15, but Chillicothe answered right back to tie the game before a jumper put Marshall ahead 24-22 at the break.
The Hornets finally managed to grab their first lead of the game in the 3rd quarter. Chillicothe relied on Jaishon White who had another double figure scoring game attacking in the paint. When the Hornets found themselves trailing 33-30, it was the outside shot from a pair of freshman that changed the complexion of the game. Burke Beetsma tied the score with a three, then Turner Jackson connected on a pair of pull up jumpers just inside the arc, Beetsma followed that up with another long range effort and the 10-0 run put Chillicothe ahead 40-33 entering the 4th quarter.
The Hornets strong play from the 3rd quarter carried over. Chillicothe prevented Marshall from getting within a possession on the scoreboard and continued the hot shooting from behind the arc. Jack Marshall hit a critical three for Chillicothe and closed the game out with strong free throw shooting. Four Hornets scored in double figures, White, Beetsma, Jackson and Marshall with Jaishon White setting the pace scoring 14 points. Chillicothe’s strong outside shooting was the difference as that quartet of Hornets combined for 9 three pointers on the night in the 54-43 win.
Chillicothe’s winning streak continued as the Hornets have now won five in a row and are 15-8 on the season. The Hornets will host Cameron on Tuesday in a boys and girls Midland Empire Conference doubleheader.
