The Chillicothe Lady Hornets soccer team travelled to Savannah on Wednesday to take on the Lady Savages in a Midland Empire Conference game. Chillicothe lost both regular season meetings last year but then turned the tables in the district tournament, defeating Savannah in penalty kicks.
The Lady Savages were motivated early on. With the strong wind at their backs, Savannah created early chances and then broke through with the opening goal 22 minutes into the game when Hayden Payuer got behind the Lady Hornets defense and nestled a left footed shot into the back post. The score was still just 1-0 with under 6 minutes to play in the half when the wind played a major factor on a ball lobbed into the penalty box by Erin Larson which bounced over the head of Lady Hornets goalkeeper Layla Mckinnis and into the goal to double the lead. Then just four minutes later, Bella Wilmes rocketed a right footed volley from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the net, giving Savannah a 3-0 halftime lead.
Chillicothe was unable to use the wind advantage in the 2nd half to the same affect, as Savannah continued to apply pressure. The Savages had 16 corner kicks to just one by the Lady Hornets and finished with a 10 to 2 shots on goal advantage. Payuer added her 2nd goal 10 minutes into the half from an assist by Lily Musser. The remaining 30 minutes were scoreless and Savannah claimed the 4-0 conference win.
The Chillicothe Lady Hornets fall to 3 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties on the season and 1-2 in the MEC while Savannah is now 6-1. Chillicothe will host Maryville on Tuesday in another conference game.
