The Chillicothe Hornets turned in an impressive all-around performance hosting the Class 3 District 16 track & field meet, highlighted by event championships, relay victories, and numerous top-three finishes against a strong field of 11 schools from across northwest Missouri and the Kansas City area.
Leading the way for the boys was Brennen FitzPatrick, who captured the 400-meter dash title with a winning time of 51.07. FitzPatrick also earned a runner-up finish in the triple jump at 13.00 meters, continuing a standout season in both sprinting and field events.
Distance standout Luke Thompson added another victory for the Hornets, winning the boys 800-meter run in 2:01.85. Teammate Jace Collins also placed in the event, finishing 10th in 2:13.64.
Chillicothe’s relay teams delivered some of the biggest performances of the meet. The boys 4×400 relay team captured first place with a time of 3:26.66, while the boys 4×800 relay team also took gold in 8:18.09, edging Lawson in a highly competitive race. The boys 4×200 relay team added a second-place finish in 1:31.69.
In the sprints, Henry Hurtgen placed ninth in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.53, while Kale Oliver added a fourth-place finish in the boys 400 meters at 53.36.
The Hornets also made a strong impact in the throwing events. Jayden Martin placed second in shot put with a throw of 15.28 meters, fourth in discus at 39.76 meters, and third in javelin with a mark of 47.22 meters. Landon Bailey added a third-place finish in shot put, while Tyler Lehmann placed fifth in discus. Trent Menconi contributed a fifth-place finish in javelin.
On the girls side, Chillicothe continued to showcase strength in distance events and field events. Lydia Bonderer finished runner-up in the girls 800-meter run in 2:29.66, while Hope Donoho placed third in the same race before adding another runner-up finish in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:55.09.
The girls relay teams also had a strong day. Chillicothe placed second in the 4×800 relay in 10:29.69 and third in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:13.30.
In the hurdles and jumps, Mya Oliver earned a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles and runner-up honors in the triple jump with a leap of 10.42 meters. Isabel Nagel added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump and competed in the 400 meters.
Chillicothe’s girls throwers also produced solid results. Emerson Staton placed second in shot put and third in discus, while Madeline Robinson earned fifth in shot put and seventh in discus. In javelin, Lexy Smith finished second with a throw of 38.66 meters, while Rylee Davis placed eighth.
Additional strong performances included Natalie Graupman, who placed sixth in the high jump, and the pole vault duo of Emelia Ramsey and Hadley Ramsey, who finished seventh and eighth respectively.
The Hornets top finishers qualified for Sectional this Saturday at Lafayette County High School in Higginsville.
