Improvements to the intersection of US 36 and Mitchell Avenue in Chillicothe are on the MoDOT plans as early as 2027/2028, using J-Turns. MoDOT Area Engineer Michael Marriott says J-Turns are used to reduce accidents at intersections that cross multiple lanes.
Intersection design used on a divided highway
Marriott explains this is a safer intersection.
Reduce right angle crashes
Marriott noted there are several J-Turn designs that depend on factors that include the width of the median. He cited US 63 as a route that has several J-Turns between Kirksville and Columbia.
MoDOT has created a webpage that addresses J-Turns. The page includes a map showing the 54 locations in the state. The page also includes a video that helps to explain the safety aspect of the J-Turn Intersection.
