Mudcats Drop Home Opener To KC Monarchs; Fall To 1-2

The Chillicothe Mudcats fell on the wrong side of the scoreboard on Wednesday’s home opener against the Kansas City Monarchs at Shaffer Park.

It was a tough one for the Mudcats from the get-go as the Monarchs had six men cross the plate in the top of the first inning, in what was a start to forget for Nishiki Iwai. The Chillicothe right-handed pitcher was only able to work one inning, giving up six runs on six walks and three hits.

The Monarchs were able to knock across two more runs in the third inning on a Danny Holmes two-RBI single that scored Morgan Johann and Ty White, the score was 8-0 in favor of the Monarchs after three innings of play.

The Monarchs added one more onto their lead in the fifth when Alex Lahasky singled in Ty White to make it a 9-0 ballgame.

The Mudcats did get a run across in the sixth inning when Cole Adair reached base, and ended up stealing home on a play where he shuffled halfway down the line and eventually taking off toward home, fooling the Monarchs and getting credit for stealing home. 9-1 Monarchs lead after six innings of play.

That was all Chillicothe could muster tonight against a tough Monarchs team, Kansas City tallied on three more in the ninth inning on its way to a 12-1 victory over the Mudcats.

The Monarchs were also supported by a one-run complete game by starting pitcher Travis Weidenbenner.

The Mudcats are back in action Friday evening on the road against the St. Joseph Mustangs, first pitch at 7:00 p.m.
