Mudcats Lose Again To The Merchants In Carroll; Extend Losing Skid

The Chillicothe Mudcats lose their fifth game in a row on Sunday against the Carroll Merchants on the road.

After both teams went scoreless in the first and the Mudcats went quietly in the top of the second, the Merchants struck for three in the bottom half of the second on a Jaxson Book three-run home run that got up into the wind and carried over the fence in left field. 3-0 Carroll after two innings.

The Mudcats and Merchants each struck for a run a piece in the third. Taydem Hashimoto scored Aiden Baerenklau on an RBI groundout to first, 3-1 Merchants. In the bottom half of the frame, the Merchants got that run back thanks to a Drew Owen solo home run over the left field wall, 4-1 Merchants after three.

The Mudcats went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, the Merchants added one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

A solo home run from Sam Weller in the fourth made it 5-1 Carroll, and a two-run shot from Jack Luthren in the fifth made it 7-1 Merchants after five. Both home runs cleared the left field wall. The Merchants blasted four home runs today to left field.

In the seventh, Canon Creason scored Nick Blakeney on an RBI groundout for the second run of the game for Chillicothe. After a very brief rain delay in Carroll lasting only around 10 minutes, the Mudcats stranded the bases loaded. 7-2 Merchants at the seventh inning stretch.

Carroll tacked on three more in the seventh highlighted by a Jaxson Book RBI single and a Sam Weller two-RBI single which made it 10-2 Carroll.

The Mudcats produced some offense in the eighth inning. Alejandro Somaza scored on a Taydem Hashimoto fielders choice, 10-3 Merchants. Next batter, Cole Adair seared a double down the right field line scoring Aiden Baerenklau. The Mudcats stranded a pair on base in the eighth and it was 10-4 Carroll after the top of the eighth.

The Merchants scored one more in the bottom of the eighth. Carroll’s Catcher, Evan Martinez led off the inning with a double. He was then replaced by Jarrett Herz on the bases. Later in the inning, a bases loaded walk from Sam Weller scored Herz to make it 11-4 Carroll.

The Mudcats went down quietly in the ninth inning and stranded two on the pillows to end it.

Carroll won 11-4 over the Mudcats on Sunday, sweeping the quick weekend series and outscoring the Mudcats 25-4 over the two-game set.

Chillicothe falls to 1-5, and has now dropped five straight games.

The Mudcats hit the road again on Monday to face off against the Clarinda A’s in Clarinda, Iowa. First pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
