Maternal Health Work by Rotary in Tanzania

Maternal and child health in Tanzania has been the focus of Martha Goedert, a resident of Trenton, in part of her 43 years as a nurse midwife.

Goedert, who is a Rotarian, spoke to the Chillicothe Rotary group on Friday about her work training local providers in Tanzania, who in turn go back to their homes and train others. At the university in Tanzania, she has classes of 200 midwifery students at a time, which she breaks down into groups of 10 each. Goedert says those students became for her a hand into the community.

10 suitcases of supplies that students took back to the dorms

Those students were putting those suitcases to good use, teaching the classes both behind and ahead of them.

Goedert is proud of the work sponsored in Africa by Rotary, including polio vaccinations, ensuring clean wells, and education for young girls.
