Courtroom Security – Prohibited Items

The Livingston County Court has announced new security rules that will be enforced by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.  Sheriff Steve Cox says new devices have been added to the list of items prohibited in the courtroom.

Cox says they can no longer allow anyone appearing or attending court, including prospective jurors, to be in possession of a smart watch or similar device.

Devices like smart watches can be used for communication purposes, be distractions to the user or others, and used to record proceedings which is a violation of court rules.

The purpose of the new rule is to increase the safety and security for everyone and to not interfere with court processes.  Cox says a perfect example would be if a juror was paying more attention to their smart watch versus the criminal trial.  If the defendant were found guilty he/she could potentially request a new trial.
