This is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Missouri and today’s topic is Flooding. The National Weather Service Meteorologist Hallie Bova says flooding is one of the most deadly aspects of severe weather in Missouri. Bova says more than 50% of flood fatalities occur while the person is driving.
There are two types of flooding that are common in Missouri. The first is flash flooding.
Flash Flooding happened quickly – move to higher ground.
Flash flooding often occurs in low-lying areas, including dry creek beds and ditches. Low water crossings can be dangerous.
River Flooding often gives us more warning but remains dangerous.
If you encounter flooded roads, – Turn Around – Don’t Drown! Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
