The Carrollton Police Department will be abolished following actions taken by the Carrollton Town Council. KCHI News spoke with Mayor Keith Higgins, who said, “The council voted to disband the police department due to lack of officers and turned it over to the county Sheriff.”
Higgins says the PD, which currently has one full-time officer, will be abolished August 9th, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department will take over in 30 days.
Services provided for the community of about 3,500 people includes at least one deputy on duty for the town on a 24/7 basis. They will enforce municipal ordinances for policing, but will NOT handle city building codes or animal control.
Higgins stated the city will provide the Sheriff’s Department with two vehicles. They will also pay $42 an hour for continuous coverage. That is about $367,000 per year.
This is a two-year agreement that will automatically renew unless either party takes action to cancel the agreement.
