The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has completed a comprehensive review of rural locations eligible for consideration of an increased speed limit to 75 miles per hour. In Northwest Missouri, the affected roads include portions on I-29 and I-35.
The review process considered several factors in making the determination, including: Current traffic volumes, Truck traffic volumes, Current speed data, Crash history, Terrain, Road design, Existing speed limits of border states, and Active construction.
The approved sections of roadway in NW Missouri include:
- I-29: from Exit 56 in Andrew County to approximately 2.5 miles south of the Iowa border.
- I-35: from the northern Cameron city limit to 4 miles south of the Iowa border
These increases are the result of a new law permitting the department to raise the maximum rural highway speed limit to 75 mph.
MoDOT crews are working this fall to update the speed limits on the approved stretches of interstate. This includes updating the posted signs along the highways. Drivers should continue to abide by the posted speed limit along the highways.
