Street Department Employees At City Council Meeting

The Chillicothe Street Department employees were on had for Monday’s Chillicothe City Council meeting, as their work schedule was one of the topics of discussion.  The Street Department is currently working a four day a week schedule of 10 hours per day.  Mayor Theresa Kelly told the council about concerns that have been expressed.

The city would be better served with a five-day schedule.

Elizabeth Jones, a Street Department employee, addressed the four-day schedule.

During the summer, this includes traveling to Trenton for asphalt and often waiting in line.

There were concerns of having to call employees in to place barricades for weekend events or in the event of storm damage.  Gillespie says barricades are dropped ahead of the events if they are given notice.  For storm damage, he says he will often handle the work alone to reduce overtime in the department.

Jones also told the council the current schedule allows employees to have a second job on the three days they have off.

No schedule changes were proposed following the discussion, but further review is expected.
